ELECTRONIC NEW HIGHLIGHT W29.2024

1. DB Hitek produces chips for Tesla

DB Hitek, a Korean foundry, will produce chips for Tesla cars. This chip is designed by an American fabless chip company, which will test DB Hitek in June, October 2024, and Tesla will also participate in the October 2024 test.

After testing, DB Hitek is expected to use a bipolar-CMOD-DMOS (or BCDMOS) process to produce the chip. The process combines analog, logic, and high-voltage devices into one chip, thereby reducing chip size, manufacturing time, and costs. The process is mainly used to produce power management ICs.

Tesla is currently collaborating with many manufacturing companies and chip manufacturers to produce many lines of chips to serve the needs of equipment and car production. With the aim of designing its own advanced SoC and driver assistance systems, while outsourcing production to Samsung’s foundry.

2. Micron plans to expand HBM chip production capacity in the US and consider production in Malaysia

According to reports, Micron Technology is building a pilot production line for advanced high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips in the United States and is considering producing HBM in Malaysia for the first time to meet strong demand. more, the demand brought about by the artificial intelligence (AI) boom.

Micron is expanding its HBM-related R&D facilities, including production lines, at its headquarters in Boise, Idaho, USA. Micron is also looking at building HBM manufacturing capacity in Malaysia, where the company already has chip assembly and testing facilities.

Micron’s goal is to triple HBM’s market share to about 20% by 2025. That’s roughly the same as its DRAM chip market share, which TrendForce data shows is about 23% to 25%.

3. GlobalWafers receives 100 million euros in R&D subsidies from Italian government for fab expansion

GlobalWafers announced that after the European Commission’s Directorate General for Competition approved the expansion project of GlobalWafers’ subsidiary MEMC Electronic Materials SpA, the Ministry of Enterprise and Production in Italy also provided 103 million euros in research subsidies. and development to build a 12-inch semiconductor wafer factory.

The new 12-inch wafer fab will support the development of downstream products, said Marco Sciamanna, general manager of MEMC SpA. In the four high-tech areas of focus in the IPCEI Microelectronics and Communications Technology of the European Key Program of Common Interest, including sensors, logic components, power electronics and transmission components pine.

GlobalWafers points out that MEMC SpA has production facilities in Novara and Merano that have been operating in Italy for decades. The wafers produced are intended for use in making various devices in Europe, including automotive, industrial Internet of Things, consumer electronics and medical devices.
