1. VINGROUP TO BUILD $387 MLN BATTERY CELL PLANT IN CENTRAL VIETNAM

Vietnam’s biggest conglomerate Vingroup will start construction on a $387 million battery cell plant for its auto arm VinFast electric vehicles (EVs) in central province of Ha Tinh this year. It will be fully installed and run at full capacity from 2025. The company has targeted global EV sales next year of 15,000 vehicles, down from its prior goal of 56,000 due to the global semiconductor chip shortage.

2. MICRON PLANS TO BUILD A NEW DRAM FACTORY IN JAPAN

The world's third largest DRAM manufacturer, Micron, plans to invest 800 billion yen (approximately US$7 billion) to build a new advanced DRAM factory near its factory in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, and is expected to start mass production in 2024. Micron originally planned to build the new plant in Singapore or Taiwan region, but after considering supply chain security and other factors, it finally chose Hiroshima County, Japan.

3. CHIP FOUNDRY PRICE INCREASE 10%-20%

Foundry quotes are expected to continue to rise. TSMC may raise its foundry price by 20%, while United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) will again increase by less than 10% from Jan 2022.
